Your Spicy One™ can thrive at school...
In the third grade, my Spicy One™ got kicked out of the "Gifted and Talented" class and landed in what she described as a “very yelly” teacher’s room.
Her new teacher’s go-to move was to have the kids put their heads down on their desks while she told them how “sick of it” she was. This did not prove to be a super effective classroom management tool.
My daughter’s teacher was clearly under-equipped and overwhelmed, so I decided to become the most dependable Room Mom in the history of Room Moms.
Back-to-school time is a challenge no matter the temperament of your child.
As a Mom of a Spicy One™, you deserve an extra dose of support when your child is navigating new classrooms, teachers, and expectations.
Our young kids need us to champion them to their teachers while they are learning to advocate for themselves. It helps if we can get really clear on their strengths and challenges.
Here’s a form I created to help you warn…er, equip your child’s teacher to best support them.
And, if you’re worried about being “that mom,” or potentially prejudicing a teacher against your child by revealing their exact brand of spiciness, rest assured that I’ve heard from many teachers and administrators about how much they appreciate parents being proactive about communicating with them about their child’s needs and preferences.
Also, one kindergarten teacher who reviewed my form requested that we, “Be sure to include what the student and their family can do to help the classroom, not just what the teacher can do.” Message received! Adding this information can let teachers know they can come to us for support as well.
Teachers and administrators are on your team, and as the person who knows your child best, making the first move is the most helpful thing you can do.
Now, go hug your kids and take some deep breaths! And may the odds be ever in your favor!
P.S: If you’re struggling to be in your child’s corner, I’d love to help you get the school year off on the right foot. Check out my group coaching program: Moms of Spicy Ones™ (waitlist opens 9/11) by clicking HERE.
In Case You Missed It
Last week on Instagram, we shared how we make mornings and evenings easier for our Spicy Ones™. It’s hard for a child to go with the program if they don’t know what the program is.
Wishing you a calm and connected week!
